Macro capability generally doesn't make the lens unsuited for non-macro use - it just adds functionality that you might not need to those other things. For example, the 100mm f/2.8 L IS macro makes a great portrait lens...

not only sharp wide open and great bokeh and fast to focus and min focus dist of 1 foot,
at f5 it is one of sharpest lenses in the world
well, not so fast...wait till you see the zeiss 100mm f2 makro, it'll knock your socks off!
