Still checking them, Fred ...
Only about 50~60,000 to go. Taking longer than it should because I cannot resist looking at some of the images; grading them; adding keywords ...
Seems that the corruption was only on one partition of one HDD. I discovered it when I copied about 67 GB of secondary image files from that partition to my main image drive (2 TB). Secondary images are ones that are copies of my primary images that have been assembled for some particular purpose - e.g. photos of a party, or some such. I keep the secondary collection in case someone wants another CDR/DVD of them. Storage is far cheaper than effort!
When I browsed a few folders of the copied set, I noticed some severe data corruption. Checked other folders on the source drive, and found some similar corruption in other folders. So have gone through all the secondary drive files, and the 67 GB of transferred files, replacing every corrupt file from one of several backups on external HDDs.
I have 4 x external HDDs with full backups. Another smaller one with all the JPEGs only. There is also a copy of all the JPEGs on my laptop HDD. I also have copies burned to DVD before I wipe each card and return it to service. The DVD files usually only contain minimal metadata such as keywords, so would lose most of that if I were to restore from that source.
Currently checking all the image files on my primary image drive ... BEFORE I do a much-needed backup. No point in over-writing a good copy of a file with one that is corrupt ...
