Rather than get third party batteries, it is possible to rebuild the old NiMH batteries. A few years ago I had planned to resurrect my old D1x by using Lithium rechargables. I came across a few websites (bookmarked at work so dont have them to hand) with instructions for dismantling the old batteries and fitting I think four AA sized cells.

Shouldnt be too hard provided you can do basic soldering/wiring. The main problem might be the safe disposal of the old cells-here in the UK there are regulations that are supposed to be followed ( servicing hand held electronic test equipment, this is something Im all too familiar with).
