I think the OP's question was answered awhile back; it now feels like people are digging into their trenches of FT vs. mFT, which need not be the case. Between the two systems there's clearly something for everyone, and the ability to carry-over some excellent FT lenses is a bonus for mFT.

The downside of using FT lenses on mFT? Size and weight, exactly why mFT has gone the route it has in lightweight primes and a narrower range quality zoom in the 12-35mm f2.8.

Having both systems, I think it's all good, my only hope being Olympus does unveil either a new affordable FT body or a hybrid that can fast AF both mFT and FT lenses.

what if its a oncer, something they only do one time, what then?

Comparing the systems, in FT one can have two weathersealed fast zooms (12-60mm f2.8-4 and 50-200mm f2.8-3.5) and an EC20 to cover a 35mm equivalent range of 24-800mm for around $2500. But these lenses are outsized and heavy for mFT; usable but a bit awkward, hardly what one would want to bring along for casual shoots. On FT bodies, perfect fit.

well as far as mFT goes your already there. Now maybe if you intend to run HG or SHG lenses with some mFT primes that could be a good idea, but as you can see a GH3 is larger than a 420, is longer but not significantly lower (0.6mm) than a 620.

So what are we really talking about?

sure if among your bag of options you have a Pen or GF1 things will look a lot different, but then IMO the mFT zooms are either touching the expensive side (for what they are) or just pretty dull. Im not trying to be disparaging but there are hints from people other than myself that the zoom range in dedicated mFT isnt particularly brilliant

In mFT one has a few different available paths. You can go all primes with the 12mm f2, 17mm f1.8, 25mm f1.4, 45mm f1.8, 60mm f2.8, and 75mm f1.8. A wonderfully fast range of optics. Downside? Price (about $3700), a dearth of quality long optics, mostly non-weathersealed construction and reduced on-the-fly flexibility in shooting compared to zooms.

you bring up a good point about the cost of a bag of primes, especially given some of the 43rds zooms will likely compete with them very strongly. Ironically Olympus philosophy at the time went something like 'zooms that are so good its like having a bag of primes'. Of course you pay for that in size and weight, but perhaps they approach cost competitive in some areas.

However the main point is as you intimated earlier, mix and match to your requirements. Just like with 43rds nobody was forced to buy SHG, it was never a crime to have available to you some of the best lenses you could buy, lenses that can indeed outresolve a lens with a similar reputation on a FF body.

Nothing to be smug about but they are options you can choose to use or not.

Or you can mix zooms and primes as I did earlier: 12-35mm f2.8, 45mm f1.8, 60mm f2.8 and perhaps the 75-300mm f4.8-6.7, the latter clearly the weak link unfortunately. A 35mm equivalent range of 24-600mm for around $3000 in a compact and lightweight system. Tack on the 7-14mm f4 for an additional $900 for even more flexibility.

Nothing's perfect, but seems to me two pretty nicely complimentary systems with capability to mix and match between them.

indeedy

And when one starts to talk about mFT primes being pricey (which to me some are given lack of weathersealing), just stroll on over to Leica land and visit their selection of $3,500-6000 primes to feel a whole lot better about things in this regard .

well you can pay more than that for them but what the hey. Especially given that most Leica users would be amateurs just sufficing their hobby.

Well at least its cheaper than horses or ocean racing ....
well ok, maybe not by a lot
