The emotional in art
In reply to Michael Everett, Jan 6, 2013

I think it appropriate to quote Ernest Bloch here.  Bloch was an important composer in the first half of the twentieth century, and what is less well-known was also a very good and dedicated amateur photographer.  He was close to Alfred Stiegliz and part of his circle and they both shared both their arts.  He is talking about music here, but his words are equally appropriate to photography.

“ …and serious composers persist in the obsession with technique and procedure. They discuss and argue; they laboriously create their arbitrary, brain-begotten works, while the emotional element – the soul of art – is lost in the passion for mechanical perfection. …Art is the outlet of the mystical, emotional needs of the human spirit; it is created rather by instinct than by intelligence; rather by intuition than by will….”

Words worth remembering for all of us.

Michael
