When I checked for 100L (a droolalicious macro lens) and street there wasn't much to see.

I did the same with the 85 1.8 and some significantly more shots came up.

I can afford the 100L but I don't want it to be a one trick pony, if it just does macro I find it too expensive and rather get the 85 1.8 at €300 it's is ok with me.

Don't get angry at eachother, just point me in the right direction

sharpest lens dpreview has tested; great bokeh - as opposed to 70-200 II which is ok, but a bit of cats eye in the corners – see photozone.de

black and rather light and discrete

most fun per dollar lens:

headshot pro photographers know 100L is as good as 85 F1.2 L F2.8 +

best application for the 85 f1.8 imo is in bad gym lighting where you are photographing fast moving players at ss 1/500 and you need f2. In street – unless they are running – you’d be shooting the 85 f1.8 at ss 1/100 without pod – yuk. Many times you need the 100L to shoot 1/40 or 1/60 handheld

Otherwise imo 100L wins:

They improved the 100L focus speed (center switch setting) over the older version which was known to be a good portrait lens. This extra AF speed and 4 stop IS and some of the best bokeh made the 100L a Great Portrait Lens. Listen to Glen and others who are pros.

4stop IS, fast to focus, some of the best bokeh, 1 ft min focus dist, black, rather light, colors and contrast are L,

For crop users, my recommended lenses are: 17-55 IS or 15-85 (top tier lenses – read The digital Picture Site), 60 f2.8 macro (blazing sharpness across the frame and fast USM – if you compose with outer points), 100L, and 50 f1.4 for f2-f2.2 shooting and 50f1.8 as backup because it is so cheap.

As always - YMMV

Thanks for your time and effort.

The 85 1.8 is a bargain but like you pointed out ss can get nasty handheld. Only in ideal conditions this lens shines. And I am on 7D so that doesn't do the speed any good either.

The 100L being usable for street makes it a lot more versatile than macro only, throw in the optics,IS and built quality it's no bargain but very attractive. Like in the DPR review regardless of the price they consider it a very good lens, speaking of a wow factor.

For macro I would go with tripod but for street I like to pack as light as possible (one lens + body only).

I got the 15-85 + 70-200 f4 + 50 1.8 all nice, but I am looking for more subject isolation at more than 50mm.

The only thing that worries me a bit is that 100mm might be a bit long on crop and 60mm is a bit short for macro and lacks IS as well.

You need to develop hand hold technique and than you can hand hold the 85 1.8 even at 1/85 shutter speeds on crop body.
