I use a Nikon D7000 and carry a Fuji X-10 when traveling light. I am looking at MFT - essentially either a Lumix G5 or Nex 6 - to see if I can combine the too and get good IQ in a compact size. Now I know that on paper the APS-C sensor of the DSLR should be a lot better than a MFT, but when you look at some of the images which come out of the G5 for example I am sometimes blown away. It always comes down to art and science I suppose. However good or bad the product made by the camera companies, it is ultimately the skill of the photographer using the camera which is the main deciding factor to the look of the final image. And so to my question. Were you an avid DSLR user who has successfully swapped to MFT. Which kit did you chose and why? I would love to hear of your experience and any advise for one thinking of treading this path.
I did it a couple of years ago, before the newer and better sensors arrived. I used to carry aDSLR and 12-60mm F2.8-4 and 50-200mm F2.8-3.5 lenses. These are great lenses but were big and needed to be carried in a large bag with my camera/s. I opted for m4/3's because it allowed me to carry more lenses in a much smaller bag and still give me great IQ. I like having a selection of lenses with me, from uwa to longer telephoto to cover all possible scenario's, especially if I'm travelling.
I now use a messenger type bag which is small and light and holds everything I could possibly need. Even my tripod is now a lot smaller and lighter if I choose to use it. I can also just throw my OMD and a couple of primes in a coat pocket if I want to go even lighter.
M4/3's gives me great flexibility in a much smaller and lighter package and the OMD will actually give me better IQ than a great many DSLR's out there. I shoot anything and everything, including sports and action and no I don't miss great C-AF capability because I know how to work around it using dof, pre-focusing and timing. IMHO I've gained a lot and lost nothing for how I shoot, YMMV.
