Doesn't that depend on what mode the AF is set to? So if you bbf and your drive is in high and AF in AI servo it will just 8fps refocus each frame?

No! That's the whole point of the back button focus technique. The point is that when you have the camera focused (or prefocused in the OP's case) where you want it, you simply take your shot(s) ​after you take your thumb off the AF-On or * button​. The AF system only has control over shutter release and refocusing while you have your thumb on the button.

Thanks, that was exactly the point I was missing.

Not pushing the button locks the focal plane, pushing it activates the whole nine yards.
