A lot of people here are recommending old Olympus cameras from the 1970s to 1990s. While I like many Olympus models (I have an E-M5 currently) I think there could be better choices among film cameras of the era I've mentioned, based on my experiences of working in a camera shop selling new and used gear through school and university from the mid-1980s to early 1990s.
Unless I'm mistaken the OM-1, which was very reliable, may have used a PX625-type battery which is no longer available. There are replacements but they away affect the metering, and don't last as long. The OM-2 and 2n were fairly durable though perhaps less so than some premium cameras of the era; the 2 SP, 3/n, 4/n and 10 were disappointing, as were most of the AF compacts. The XA series was one of the most pocketable enthusiast cameras of the film area, and the lenses were excellent, but the failure rate was high.
Given the challenges getting film cameras fixed I'd go for metal-bodied, manual cameras from premium manufacturers that were used as back-ups by pros and in establishments such as schools where they got a lot of use. I've already mentioned the Nikon FM-2n - honestly, I believe there was no more rugged film camera, excepting perhaps the F2, which is now a lot older, likely to have had a much harder life, and more expensive used - followed by the FE-2n.
The Pentax K1000 was also remarkably dependable, excepting in the final couple of years of its life, when production moved from Japan (to China, I think). The tiny MX and pro LX were also very reliable. I think the FM/FE and Pentaxes all used SR/LR 44 batteries which are still widely available.
I also would not rule out a Leica. The M6 is now surprisingly cheap to buy, though lens prices have held up due to the fact that they can be used on the digital models.
