It appears that one may often in sports want the focus point to stay the same for a burst. A situation I am interested in is taking a burst of a group of horses as they pass a particular point. I would probably use spot focus with the 7D and catch the first horse and then keep on shooting as the horses pass. Since horses run about 50 to 55 feet per sec. when all out in the final 1/16 mile and are about 8 feet long nose to tail I may be able to catch up to 4-6 horses in an 8 fps burst and all should be in focus as they pass the original focus point. I would use my 70-200 f4 IS at f4.

It often helps me to ask the question of someone else so I can think about it more.

Anyway, comments would be welcome.

I am looking for a sports camera. I don't have a fast fps one at this point.

You could do that by putting the Camera and lens in MF (manual) mode. It will then stay at the point you focus.
