I'm considering getting the Sigma 30mm. I think it's 1 stop faster than the kit lens at 30mm, but since the Sigma doesn't have any stabilization, is that stop lost by the ability to use a slower shutter speed with the kit lens?

Sometimes I'd just as soon have the speed, particularly in impromptu situations where people are moving about.

I've always wondered what the basis/calculation for the 3-stop claim is. Obviously it's different depending on how steady your hand is.

If you're shaky with OSS, then you're shaky without it.  Try it yourself both ways.  Take a number of photos and average the results.  It's just a rule-of-thumb; I'm not sure that you can be too precise about it.  At any rate, it's clear to me that OSS works well.
