It also refers to using the right aperture to achieve maximum resolution where you want to have it. Most lenses cannot do this trick (if at all) without stopping down even for center sharpness.

It is the same with most lenses, and regardless of the format. My question was why the D800 needs special lenses whilst most other cameras work fine with what they have. Take D7000 as an example, it works fine with whatever you put on it. What makes D800 so different?

Tlhere is good reason why medium format lenses are pretty expensive if they are able to deliver wide open (eg Leica S or Pentax FA 120 f4 macro).
