Remember that the D600 has lower resolution than your D300.

In a scene framed the same with each camera, the D600 image would be 24MP vs. 12 MP for the D300, no?

Yes. 24MP on a much larger area. The D600 corresponds to a 10MP DX, not a 12MP. No big deal, I don't think the differences are really visible, but never the less, the resolution is lower.

If the scene is framed the same with both cameras, there is no crop factor to consider, so the same image on the D600 will consist of 24MP, and the D300 image will consist of 12MP. You will get twice the MP, not less.

Yes, but on a much larger image sensor area. When I talk about resolution I mean sensor resolution. That doesn't change, regardless how you compose an image.

A 24MP sensor has more resolution than a 12MP sensor.  You seem to be introducing a crop factor value, which is not applicable if one frames the scene the same with both cameras.
