Live view consistently does a better job than PDAF performed via the view finder. I have tested it at all distances (close to far) and it consistently nails focus.

Really? You find you get better focus with live view than through the viewfinder? That surprises me. Are you talking about the D800 specifically?
And what does PDAF stand for? (I'm acronym-impaired.)
