Part of my Landscape Photography Best Shot Practices is to use the ultra crispy live view focus to absolutly NAIL the focus on my shots?

Live view consistently does a better job than PDAF performed via the view finder. I have tested it at all distances (close to far) and it consistently nails focus.

I have heard from more than one source that the D800 leaves a bit to be desired in the Live View focusing arena. Wondering if that is true

In what way? Provide specifics on what was being desired that did not meet the expectation.

Really? You find you get better focus with live view than through the viewfinder? That surprises me. Are you talking about the D800 specifically?

And what does PDAF stand for? (I'm acronym-impaired.)
