Remember that the D600 has lower resolution than your D300.

In a scene framed the same with each camera, the D600 image would be 24MP vs. 12 MP for the D300, no?

Yes. 24MP on a much larger area. The D600 corresponds to a 10MP DX, not a 12MP. No big deal, I don't think the differences are really visible, but never the less, the resolution is lower.

If the scene is framed the same with both cameras, there is no crop factor to consider, so the same image on the D600 will consist of 24MP, and the D300 image will consist of 12MP.  You will get twice the MP, not less.

Anyway, the Op has mentioned that resolution is very important for him, and in that case the order of cameras currently is: D800E, D800 and then the D600. The differences between the D800E and the D800 are just marginal, but between the D800 and the D600 is noticeable.
