More rumors: "The X100 will have a new function called Digital Split Image function"
Jan 4, 2013

PhotoRumors talks about a Digital Split Image function for the X100s "used to improve focusing". Not focus peaking, this should be interesting. Split image focusing usually depends on having more than one light path, one to go to the film or sensor plane, the other to go to the focusing lens or prism arrangement. In fact it requires small prisms on the focusing screen too, to give the photographer small samples of the image field taken from different parts of the image. When these are aligned, the image will be in focus.

I don't know how this would be done without some kind of additional opto-mechanical mechanism, but hopefully as the name implies, it will be completely in software and so can be added to the X-E1 and X-Pro1 through a firmware upgrade.

That is, assuming it's not just an unfounded rumor in the first place.
