None of this matters though. People tend to ignore facts that do not confirm their distorted world view.

No, it doesn't matter because you still have 200 X as many gun related homicides.

There was a 40% increase following 1997 due to a rise in gang violence in inner cities in the early part of the last decade. Most of these were committed with smuggled, replica and home-made weapons. The death rate however did not increase.

Gun homicides however remained almost static in the UK, but 50 a year is a pretty small number compared to 10,000 in the US. You have a long way to go.

Gun crime has since fallen back after targeted police action against gangs and a change on the law to increase the penalty for illegal gun smuggling to life imprisonment. Form 2010 to 2011 alone there was a decrease of 17%.

So there are other methods of dealing with the problem.
