Strobists, a question...

Finally got myself a couple of gel sets for my flashes.
I got a bunch of CTBs and CTOs ie each set.
"warm" light like tungsten or halogen can actually vary a a lot, in what regards to color temperature.
So, is there a trick to quickly find out which of the CTO shades to apply to a particular artificial "warm" light environment or do we actually have to experiment with them all to find out which one is more appropriate for the scene?
Thanks for any replies.
