To use Extra tele conversion for stills you need to have three separate settings as follows:

1. Picture Quality needs to be set to JPEG only. Not RAW or RAW + JPEG.

2. Picture Setting must be set to M or S in any aspect ratio.

3. The Zoom Lever must be set to Zoom even with manual zoom lenses.

When everything is set properly, the Picture Quality icon on the display will begin with 'ex' and you will be able to activate the extended tele conversion by using the zoom lever.

One thing I'm still confused about re: Custom Menu is whether changes made in the Recording Menu are retained in the Custom Menu yet overridden otherwise. Specifically, can I set the Custom Menu to shoot in jpg (to make use of the EX), yet continue to use RAW as my default when not in custom mode? I'm having trouble getting this to work.

Setup your camera to use the extra tele conversion in whatever mode you like (PASM or even IA), then save your setup to one of the custom setting locations (C1 or C2 1-3). Then you can use the EX whenever you switch to the custom setting location, but use your other defaults when in PASM.

I hope that made sense. The custom locations save virtually EVERYTHING.
