I think safety depends mostly on how you present yourself. If you come off as a wealthy westerner flaunting your wealth, or even just showing it, you will be a target. I like bicycle touring, and with that you get grubby, and people take pity on you. In this case, crime is rare. Since I like wildlife photography, the N1 system is great for this application where small size is essential. I don't know if I'll give up my D300 for the N1 yet for birding, I love that camera with my 300 f/4.
