I turned on my tilt meters on my d800e a few months back. I don't see the meters when I turn on my camera, but after shooting, the tilt meters come on. If I turn it off and back on, no tilt meter. I check 10-15 after turning the camera on and I see it in the view finders.

Am I accidentally turning it on? I like the meters in the view finder because it helps me frame the pictures and reduce the number of edits I need to straighten pictures when I'm on, for example, a mountain and taking of the horizon.

You can set the viewfinder horizon toggle to the preview or function buttons in the custom settings controls menu.

It's been turned on in the custom settings menu. It just doesn't come on until I'm shooting for, say oh, 10-15 minutes. Once it's on, it's a joy to have. I turn it off for kicks to see if it shows upa gain after I turn the camera back on, but it's not on. Only after about 10-15 mins it turns itself back on. Perhaps I'm turning it on by accident. A previous poster said it's by the DOF button. Perhaps I'm accidentally hitting that. I'll try that tonight.

Its a toggle that can be set to either the preview (DoF) button or the function button.
