I'm not really interested in getting in to it. Most 7 owners have confirmed that it's a nosier camera, and several have said they prefer the better performance of the 16mp sensor.

And that's precisely what I have said, they looked at the image at 1:1 level!

Assuming your screen has 150dpi; looking at NEX-7 24MP image at 1:1 level would be equivalent to a 40" size image. While doing the same for the NEX-6 16MP image at 1:1 would be equivalent to a 32" image! So you know which image would look better!

So if you shrink down the 24MP to the same output size as the 16MP, most the extra noise you saw at 1:1 would disappear.

Additionally the DXO scores he referenced show an advantage to the 5n, F3, etc. A huge advantage? Not reallly, but not one small enough to be irrelevant to all but pixel peepers.

No, the difference is very small.

5N's 1079 score over 7's 1016 score represents a difference of less than 0.09 stop!

Also nosnoop doesn't seem to understand how sensors work. A sensor is a strip of photosites. The more you try to cram on to a specific area, the smaller they are and the less light they gather. So yes, a larger sensor gathers more light as he says, because the photo SITES are larger.

But you don't look at photosites or each individual pixels when you look at images!

Even though smaller photosites would give you more noise individually, the noise is reduced when you combine them. As you shrink the image, the noise gets less and less.

The key is the total amount of light gathered from ALL the pixels. That would determine the low ISO noise and dynamic range.   And that's why it is the sensor size which matters, not the individual number of pixels.   One good example is RX100's 20MP sensor actually slightly outperforming the Nikon 1's 10MP sensor (though within the same ballpark performance) - both have 1" size sensor.
