I've had a recent experience of editing pictures (beauty shots) because for some reason the makeup on the model looked orange (even if in person it looked ok under white light) How do I avoid this? Is it also partly because of the makeup or lighting?

EVERYTHING looks very orange if you use Auto White Balance under tungsten (incandescent) lighting. Same with compact fluorescent lamps meant to simulate the colour of tungsten (incandescent) lighting.
