Hi!

I don't have the D600, but it looks to me as if the problem lies in metering location. I think the camera has tried to get an average for metering over the whole field. What I think was needed was to use spot metering to get the face correctly exposed, and then bring up the shadows in post if that is what you want to get.

I know you have a lot of experience in photography, and I hope you don't feel I am talking down to you. I am not an expert with flash, but I have certainly blown out plenty of flash subjects!

Also, try reducing flash output and using fill flash. I am sure the camera can do it.
