They had a $300 rebate prior to Jan. 1 and now maybe a $250 one on the 3880. I suspect whatever it is to follow the 3880 may be wireless and about the same resolution.
They may change their cart design to try and foil refillers which might be a bad reason to wait out for a later model as it may take some ink hackers a while to crack it. Ink is where Epson makes their big money.
I think Canon changed their design with the Pro-10/100 series in a "foil the refillers ink attempt" too? Dunno.

It is illegal for epson to forbid end user from using 3rd party ink. Also, despite the common belief epson can not deny warantee service due to use of 3rd party inks unless they can prove that the damage came from those inks. Also, if you do the math each gallon of epson ink runs you about $3000, yes that is $3,000 per gallon. So as you can see they have a big interest in changing their chip designs to "disable" all 3rd party chips currently in existence. I bet next line of printers will use new chips and it will take some type to reverse engineer the resetter.
I just LOVE conspiracy theories, mostly they turn out to have a lot of truth, and some fact in them.
I believe the delay in releasing a follow up to the 3880 is due to Epson attempting to develop a similar system to the Canon Pro 1 where it is VERY difficult at this point to get 3rd party inks working for all 12 carts. I would be betting my farm on that one. Epson have already reagionalised their chips for the 1400 so we in Aust. cant use the USA refill carts.....that was a step taken to thwart the home use machines in AUS. converting to eBay substitute inks and purchasing American carts to refill.
The Epson ink for my 3880 costs $100 per cart here in Australia, and our A$ is worth 1.3X the US$ (at the moment) so how much do you guys pay in the USA?
The ink I bought from Cone cost me $A 10.71 per cart versus the $A100per cart for OEM Epson.....figure that math (if you can).....:-)
Reverse engineering says that if Epson can perfect the un substitutable cart (wow what a word!!!) they will experience a sudden mega surge in profits to offset any development costs........ as an aside I see Cone and the others developing CISS to get around that...........depending on the Printer On-board engineering......or perhaps a SUPER SMART carts that can fool anything...maybe??
