I do disagree here!
Haven't you ever heard of the "ETTR", exposure to the right (in histogram). It's a fact, that you gain half of the info in rightmost fifth of the histogram, half of remaining in next fifth, half of the remaining etc. You have to be careful with the blown highlights though.
At least I almost always fiddle the pics with computer.
