Re: Nikkor 24 - 70 f/2.8 G IF-ED Lens - Image Stabilization needed for shooting video?

i will soon be buying a Nikon D800. my first serious DSLR camera. i am having trouble deciding on the lens. there are SOO many on Nikon's site. i know i should avoid DX lenses. i'm somewhat confused about all the 'symbols' after the lens (IF, ED, SW, VR II, etc.).
i don't think i can afford a number of prime lenses and i don't think that would best suit the type of shooting i do, which will be mostly static shots without focus pulls, panning or tracking. i will shoot longtake stills and hand held on somekind of NON shoulder rigg (still to be determined)
i'm thinking the lens should be the Nikkor 24 - 70 f/2.8. i wish Nikon had a great 24 - 105 f/2.8 with image stabilization. i don't think that even the 24 - 70 has it. do i need it.
what do you think. and thanks!
