What's the general consensus of using the 70-300 on the D800/E?

I'm just debating whether or not it's worth keeping. I've been taking some practice shots, but I'm still undecided. If anyone here regularly uses it, what's your impression? It's just such a lightweight, convenient lens. I used to use it on my D90.

Not to sound harsh but putting that lens on a D800E is like putting a bow-tie on a pig. I'd rather have a D700 with a 70-200 VRII. I say this because I own the 70-300 and it's cool for the zoom factor but that's about it because it's a bit too soft for my taste at the long end.

So you compare one lens with another 3-4 times the price...

The 70-300 is BETTER on the D800E than it is on the D700. Every lens gets better on the D800E until the lens reached the maximum resolution.
