Others have stated edits or typos that I agree with, so I won't repeat them. But I do have a question about your statements on ISO. Do you have a source I can read up on about the use of ISO compression in P&S cameras? On dSLRs it's usually indicated by an "L" descriptor (and "H" used for expansion) to warn users of the probable effects of compression or excess gain. If I can read up on more about it, I can do a test to see where the base fill rate actually is on the SX50. Or Canon can tell us, which I tend to doubt will happen. Any help you can give would be appreciated.

It's easy enough to check. If the SX50 sensor can 'handle' a higher exposure (a longer/slower shutterspeed) at ISO 80 than at ISO 100 without clipping, then ISO 80 is actually a lower ISO than ISO 100. But even if the lower ISO can't handle a higher exposure (more light/photons), then that doesn't mean that the lower ISO is inferiour. Take for example the old 5D. ISO 50 on the 5D is actually the same as ISO 100. The two ISOs can both handle the same amount of light/exposure, and are therefore equally good. It's just that different tone curves are used for the two ISOs, with a different amount of highlight headroom above metered middle gray.

Anyway, my guess is that the SX50 has the same 12mp Sony BSI-CMOS sensor as the pentax Q (or maybe a slightly improved version), and according to DxOmark.com the 'measured' base ISO of the Pentax Q is ISO 92. Hope (and expect) that we'll see a DxO test of the SX50 before long.

Thanks for that, Steen. On my 5D, I did not like the tone curve at the "L" setting so I basically ignored it. Found ISO 200 to have the best "balance".

If the SX50 sensor is the same BSI as the Q and DXO ranks the Q base as 92, it's very possible that the SX50's low ISO of 80 may be very close to the actual base. Hope they post their tests soon since that will save me some work.

Thanks again for the input,

Vision
