At 100% the faces have considerable noise at 1600.

I was expecting a little better. Easily correctible with nr software, but is this normal for this sensor in your experience?

I see virtually *no* noise in this photo - certainly less than I'd normally see from my D3.
if you expect less from any crop camera, you will certainly be disappointed.
