The E-M5 menu layout has got to be the most ad-hoc interface I've seen on a piece of consumer electronics this side of a Yaesu radio.

I find it to be slightly better than the menus of my Nikon D200, but that's not saying much

For example:

1. The FIRST item in the menu, under "shooting menu 1" is "Card Setup." Why? Because the most important thing I do before taking any picture is format my memory card? Why isn't this option under the Setup menu?

2. Why aren't all of the items under the "Custom -> utility" menu under the Setup menu instead?

I agree... it's kind of silly to make Card Setup the first menu item. It should really be at the bottom, and it does seem like many items were just dumped wherever as an afterthought.

3. Why have a "shooting menu 1" and "shooting menu 2" page(s)? Why not just a "shooting menu" page that scrolls, like Custom does?

I realize that the manuals have been printed and the chances of future firmware that addresses these inconsistencies is zero. But I gotta vent.

Fortunately you rarely have to dive into the menu system once you get your camera set up the way you want it. Read the following article, and make sure you enable the Super Control Panel - that makes changing most settings quick and easy.
