Its situational, I use it with naturally backlit portraits.

Using the sun to give nice highlights around the models frame and the HSS flash to light the face nicely.  Takes a few tests to get the amount of light right and I almost always need to diffuse it.

Heres a shot from New Years Day of my baby mumma and our son.  Backlight was pretty strong and this random carriage was under a tree (at Royal Melbourne Gardens)

HSS let me light them well by only giving a tiny bit of light.  Had no where to bounce it otherwise and it would have over exposed.  Was a really sunny day.

HSS In a Wagon under a tree, scene was completely shaded.
