Interesting thread, but in my opinion, fundamentally asks the wrong questions.  You assume there is something more pure about looking at photos on paper instead of online, or - to take a step back from that - that printed photos will last longer or be better cared for than print photos.  Print photos die out with their owners, get lost, shredded, put in a shoe box somewhere.  While certainly more people are taking photos, I think that those who take photos as fine art will continue to keep track of them and they will go the same way fine art prints went, those who take them as snapshots will care for them the same way.  And by all means, the use of facebook, instagram, picassa, etc just make more people share photos rather than less.

Sure, it's a new medium, but that doesn't make it fundamentally less worthwhile.
