Ratty, I may be off on this, but as a guy who isn't really short on the ability to buy/own the things he wants, you strike me as being in at least somewhat of a similar situation. I am a big fan of doing what ever the heck I want, so might I make these suggestions?
1) How much could you really sell your S5 Pro for? I have seen a few for sale between $400 and $600. Honestly, for as much as you love that camera, and it is well deserved love, I wouldn't sell it. Honestly, what is $500 at the end of the day? You won't miss that money, but you'll miss that camera.
You are right, the S5 wont bring in any serious money. With the Nikon grip for it and 4 OEM batteries I might get $600 for it. I may end up keeping the S5 and the Nikkor 35mm f/1.8. Not a money locked up in there. My real concern is selling my cherished 24mm f/1.4 lens. It is really an amazing piece of glass. I cringe thinking about selling it and am paralyzed on moving forward.
2) On the Nikons... Is the D600 an option?
No. I dont want to go half way into full frame. Money is no object for me in this decision.
I'm going to say it again here in a way. For a guy who loves to shoot and will use his cameras often and in good health, the extra $1K between these two is negligible over time, so you should get which ever one you truly want. I just wonder if you'll keep the 24mm and go with the wider POV, or maybe sell it and go with the 35mm f/1.4G.
I may end up getting both, but I wont sell the 24mm if I have a camera that can shoot it. In the crop world I ALWAYS want wider so I will fit in nicely with the expanded range of my 24.
There is a few hundred dollar difference there.
3) On the X-E1... I am not sure what the used market is like out there, but instead of being able to return/exchange, why not just sell it if you don't like it? Yeah, you lose a little bit of money, but consider it a rental fee. The kit is $1399, so that isn't really that bad.
True, and that is an option. Selling stuff here in China is just a mess though. It really sucks living away from home in some ways.
I don't mean to trivialize money, and yes, I do have a wife who might kill me if she saw this post, but the only real big ticket item here is the D800E which I think is around $3K. I say forget about the few hundred you might get for your S5 and the time it might take to sell it, and just keep the thing. You know there will be occasions you wish you still had it.
Buy the Nikon, because you know you want to. Buy the X-E1, because you know you want to do that too. Maybe you keep both, maybe you sell one of them. Maybe don't even make a decision until the Fuji announcement in a week.
I am lucky enough right now to have a lot of disposable income. And my wife, bless her, wants me to be happy away from home so she "approves" of any purchase I want. So I can buy anything I want, almost as often as I want without touching savings or money set for savings. Yet I dont want to have more gear than I can fit in my backpack. I dont want stupid amounts of gear. That's just a principle of mine.
One last point, that I think is very valid is that everyone here knows that the X series suck at auto focusing. They might deny it, but they know that it is true. Certainly Fujifilm knows that they make a bottom of class camera in this aspect. So I know that there are improvements coming, lots of them and that any camera I purchase now will be superseded in a large and important way very soon.
