After today's outing, I have decided to retire my S5 Pro. Just not happy with the lack of resolution anymore. Love the colors. More than that, just adore the color of this camera. But the lack of resolution is killing me.

Now the decision on what to replace it with is reaching red hot intensity. Do I retire my prized Nikkor 24mm f/1.4 lens along with it? This lens is legendary, one of the finest wide angles ever made. Sharp corner to corner with f/1.4 to boot.

If I drop my addiction to Fuji colors, and go with the Nikon D800, I get my resolution and keep the 24mm.

But my Fuji color addiction is hard to shake. Almost impossible. The X-E1 is an alternative way to go forward. But then, I have no SLR, for the first time in 25 or more years.

I've never had such an anguishing camera decision before. I'm usually pretty good picking out gear and rarely fret over it. This is uncharted territory for me.

I have heard good reports about the D800 with colour and skin tone rendering, although many of the samples I have seen are still not quite up to the Fuji standard - but this is only my opinion of course.

But even with the 16MP X-Trans giving higher resolution than a typical 16MP Bayer type sensor, the fact is the D800 will give you a fair bit more. The D800 looks a beautiful camera and if you can afford it and the expensive premium lenses (assuming you also want to compliment it with more best glass) then that's a natural and nice step up for you from your S5 Pro I would have thought.

(NOTE: For those that may not know, the X-Pro1 and X-E1 have exactly the same X-Trans sensor so resolution findings for X-Pro1 applies to X-E1)

".... the X-Pro1 continues to show line structure beyond its Nyquist limit"

and ...

"There are several points to be made here. Firstly, the X-Pro1 shows visibly higher resolution in this chart test than a conventional 16MP Bayer-type camera such as the Nikon D7000, or even the Sony NEX-5N (which has a particularly weak AA filter). In fact, in terms of resolution it's very close indeed to the 24MP Sony NEX-7 or the Sigma SD1 ..."

On the topic of resolution dpreview said (ref X-Pro1 Review - Resolution)

You have an X100 (I think) so you are already pretty familiar with the difference in shooting style needed for the X-E1 so I guess your choice comes down to resolution. Your Nikkor 24mm I assume could be used on the X-E1 with an adapter so you are not going to lose that.

I have worked with my S3 Pro for seven years. Over recent years I have purchased both a Canon 5DII and Nikon D7000 in an attempt to "upgrade" from my S3 Pro but both of these fell short and were sold. I too am faced with this decision, although with me it was between the X-E1 and the D600.

It is hard to work out with you whether you are genuine or not, considering the negativity of a great many of your posts. But anyway, I'll assume on the good side.
