RAW, sensor crops, and i.Resolution
Jan 1, 2013

This message derives from a recent conversation with Ronomy here: http://forums.dpreview.com/forums/thread/3359646

If the camera is set to save in RAW only, it turns out that the i.Resolution choices remain available, but not the choices for i.Dynamic or digital zoom. Similarly, the only available mpx settings are those for full-frame (16:9, 4:3, etc) and not the lower mpx choices.

With i.Resolution set to zoom, the camera can zoom to 48x instead of 24x.

It appears that the increased zoom is paralleled by a decrease in RAW image and  file size, so a "48x" Raw image is approximately 2000x1500 instead of the standard 4000x3000.

Clearly the effect here is just a sensor crop (at least from the RAW perspective), however it may be of value because it increases the magnification of the active portion of the sensor in the EFV, and may thus aid in focusing (or at least confirmation of proper focus)
