You cannot expect to use sharpening to remedy a basically soft (due to too long shutter speed when hand holding, incorrect focusing or moving subject) shot. The shots look as if they lack in contrast - which can very well be down to the conditions when taking the shot (haze is a normal phenomenon close to large expanses of water) and you weren't close enough to get all of the sensor on your subject, that makes any problems with focusing and shutter speed when hand holding even bigger - when you expect to crop you have to treat the amount of crop as yet another factor in determining the shutter speed you can get away with.

Were you using a UV filter? The 100-400L is as far as my experience is concerned incompatible with filters - when I still used expensive protective filters my 100-400L did focus incorrectly often, the filter also contributes to issues concerning the contrast.
