True enough, and some people like Matthew Durr on the NEX forum are doing sports photography with manual lenses and getting great shots, but I don't think it is the point.

The point is rather that, spoiled as we are, we can expect to point a good SLR at almost anything that moves and get a remarkably high rate of shots that nail the focus compared to the good old times, when I would occasionally screw up even nearly static subjects.

Of course it is rewarding to dial in that exact critical point of focus. And of course, a skilled person can use a range focus, or rangefind his focus manually pretty quick with practice, of peak his way to perfection, or perhaps even focus trap his images. Lots of ways to skin a cat, and you get lots of cred for doing so.

But I could also write a nice letter longhand, rather than dash off a quick text or email. Times change, expectations change, and we still have other things to worry about when capturing a photograph the concentrating on focusing.
