5dmkII, next buy after 85mm 1.8? Liking galleries of roughly 28mm to 45mm

The wife loves her 85mm, so keeping it for portraits, but it's not working for my style.

Spent hours on pixel-peeper and really like the FL of the galleries  between 28mm and 45mm.   I was  thinking of the 17-40mm f4, and am now checking the 35mm.    I rarely use the zoom on myphotos so a slightly wide prime would be a good start right? I also think the 85 is way too tight for use preferred indoor use.  I really want the price under $900.  Also looking at those "lens rental" websites, any recommenations?
