I think 1/4s at 70mm is probably pushing it. I've had luck with sharp shots at 1/10 s though.

You try taking a shot at 70mm at 1/8, or 1/4 or slower - if you're telling me you can get it sharp with the Nikon hand-held you're lying. However, with the Tamron this is easily possible. That is major defining factor here.
