Can someone suggest the steps to select and change color ?

I see two examples that are realy nice.
About the solutions given, i tried and can not follow them on my own (just yet).
Except for GCAM's, that was what i could do before. But wanted to go a little further.

I'll keep working with the directions given but have to learn things on the fly.
E.g. Babine's QuickMask and Alpha channel. Couldn't save selection to A-channel.

I started out with GHwell's, and didn't understand at first he painted on an "empty" layer.
As you all can see, i have learning to do.
