In baseball, the batting average is the ratio of the number of the number of hits that gets the runner on base to the number of times the batter is at-bat (walks, being hit by the ball, or interference by the catcher, do not count as hits or at-bats).

For example, if a batter gets a hit and is on base 200 times out of 500 at-bats, the batting average is 200 / 500 = 0.400. So, if you're batting 1.000, it means that you get a hit and on base every time you come up to the plate.

There you go. Simple really. I do remember trying to get to grips with it once and not quite getting there... still fun to watch though. Very tactical.
