I thought the "less than new-new" L lenses need a UV filter to become weatherproof, except for the new lenses like the new 500L f/4. Somewhere (I don't remember where) I read that my 70-200L -f/4 IS needs the UV filter for the weather proofing.

Very well could be the case I have not paid a lot of attention to weatherproof on Canon since they don't cover weather damange under the warranty on any of the cameras I own. I remember seeing a list of Canon lenses I believe Canon published that listed the L lenses with weather seals.
