Why does rendering on a PC take 10 seconds compared to 0.25 seconds in-camera?

C++ .. which is basically preprocessed to C .. and is slower why, exactly: vfp tables? On modern optimizing compilers? At 4Ghz vs 20Mhz?

I'm sure that the firmware code used incamera is some version of assembly, DSP is a special version of assembly code.
