I guess my question is: how is putting in your pants pocket without a microfibre style bag any better for avoiding ingesting dust than using said m/f bag, esp if you clean the bag out regularly?

It isn't. Based on the examples seen here I decided the problem is usually some sort of debris from the manufacturing process coming loose and landing on the sensor, not pocket lint from outside the camera getting sucked in. Some of the "dust specs" are pretty big and people see them even if they always use a case. If the bag is not going to help I would rather not bother with it.

I have not noticed any problem with the battery draining quickly so far.

Thanks.  Now I understand.  My use of the microfibre bag is more to protect the camera.

B.
