I have both the a77 and a99, and am retired.  This week I'm baiting birds, and shooting them with the cameras.

You mentioned lens selection.

I have 14 lenses.

The a99 has the same lens on it 80 to 90 percent of the time.

The a77 shares that lens, and one other.

The rest sit on the shelf collecting dust.

I have 2 primes that I use off and on, a 30 and an old Minolta 50mm f1.4

You can get almost any prime you need.

You can get nice fast Carl Zeiss glass that lasts forever and will work on the next camera.

If I was jumping in with the knowledge I have now I'd get a 50mm and a 100 mm aprox. lens for macro.

And I love my 70-300 G lens, it's great.

But really with one camera you will find you end up with a favourite lens and it will live on the body.

I'd not flinch myself,  I'd get the a99 with CZ glass and one good long zoom, a nondescript bag, and a 27" iMac computer with a good high end printer and Bob's yer proverbial uncle.  As we say, eh?  But that's my take.  I think Sony is innovative, and when you understand the breath of their offerings in high end pro video, it follows that the innovation is going to continue.  Bravo eh!!

I'm apoligise I know too little of Nikon or Canon to offer opinions.  I'm sure they make nice cameras.  I'm smitten with the EVF (or little high def TV) you peer into.  I bet there is a 3d version of that soon, with a viewfinder for each eye you adjust for the width of your eyeballs.  James Bond lives!

Ok I'm exuberant.  Sorry.
