I have a D7000 that came with the 18-200 3.5-5.6 ED VR II and have had soft focus results compared to using my Nikkor 50mm 1.4G
I have read that:
1. Any kit lens is not that great
2. Any super zoom will have issues
I gather that the only way to get sharp results is to purchase 3 normal pro zoom lenses of different length to cover the 18-200mm range

1. No, Nikon kit lenses don't suck - indeed they are terrific value for the money.

2. Define "issues" in regard of "super zoom".

The 50 mms are generally very sharp - a 11x super zoom with all its glass naturally is not as sharp.

The "clou" of a super zoom is its great versatility, often also referred to as "travel zoom".

"3 normal pro zoom lenses of different length to cover the 18-200mm range" will set you back some bucks - the holy trinity aka 14-24/2.8, 24-70/2.8 and 70-200/2.8 will cost circa 2000 + 1900 +  2400 = 6300 USD.

Plus you have to carry the size and the weight and do have to change lenses - but indeed the pics will be sharper.
