Can someone suggest the steps to select and change color ?

Hello all,

my first question here i think.
Yes, i'd like to remove the cupboard handle behind daughters head.
In the mean time keeping the hair and fill around with the red of the kitchen.

I tried a bit in CS6 but am stuck.
Did a bit of selecting and masking but i don't have the proper order and or don't understand the steps to take.
The funny thing is, the hair is a mask in itself on the clear handle, don't know how to take advantage off it.

Could someone please explain how this is done ?
