Do you own a car, Lee Jay? Because that's an industry that manages about a 3% per annual model revision metric improvement.
Yes I do, and my most recent car purchase was an 04 Prius over my 2-door 1988 sports coupe (itself far beyond its time). That's a big step forward from prior cars (huge, really), and was worth my time and money. The 10 Prius isn't as big an upgrade, and I didn't buy one.
How about a house?
I can upgrade it myself, and have done so many times, with more plans in the future.
Seriously, tiny, incremental upgrades are the norm for all industries. You get access to an improved part, you launch it.
I waited to buy a new computer until I could move from a desktop to a laptop, get 20 times the CPU performance, 10x the hard drive space, 8x the memory, 20x the graphics performance, and do it all for half the price.
I just upgraded my phone. I got 10 times the processor performance, 128 times the RAM, 10 times the cell connection speed, 4 times the screen resolution, and many other features my old one didn't have at all.
I'm looking at buying a new telescope. My old one is great, but the new one will capture 5 times as much light, carry 10 times the auxiliary weight, have an option to be 2 whole stops faster, another to be 6 whole stops faster. That's a worthy upgrade.
when I bought my 5D.
5D II was anything but "tiny".
Same AF, only 25% more pixel density, same basic body, same basic UI. It's basically a 20D with an expanded sensor and some limited video modes.
There are signs things are changing, with the f/8 AF upgrade to the 5DIII, the radio flashes and so on, but there are still signs of stupid behavior too, such as the removal of video crop, the lack of support for in-camera DNG
DNG is inadequate, ask any raw software developer. The only thing in-camera DNG is a "sign of" is that your camera company has too little resources to do anything better.
Wrong. DNG is a super-set of NEF and CR2. Actually, NEF and CR2 are very nearly DNGs already, except for a bit of metadata. And don't forget, Leica uses DNG. That's not exactly a company that chooses low-quality stuff. DNG is a container for raw data, and it stores that raw data just like NEFs and CR2s, if you want it to, but adds things like color profiles and the options for lower resolution or lossy compression, the later of which is far superior to Canon's S-raw or M-raw, giving better quality in a smaller size.
, and the lack of in camera stabilization.
That's bed adequately debunked.
I'd like it for my short primes and ultrawides. I don't have a stabilized 17-40, 35/1.4 or 85/1.8, nor could I without in camera stabilization.
Until they do better, I'll continue to keep my 7-year-old cameras.
You do what works for you. But try to mellow out on the "signs of stupidity" speeches.
The 5DIII is almost a worthy upgrade to the 5D. All it really needed is lower read noise and video crop modes and I'd likely have purchased one. Much better AF, faster, better JPEG engine, f/8 AF (soon, hopefully), etc. With video crop and more low-ISO DR, it would have been nearly perfect. It would have been even better with a 45MP sensor based on the C100 approach as an option for 4-pixel binning, native, or a 2x crop mode. Hope springs eternal for the upcoming 7DII.
