What does a Gold Award really mean?

I'm not sure what you mean by that. The scores and ratings are objective — to the extent possible. The awards (gold and silver), however, are subjective.

To my mind, the awards are there because if all we needed were feature lists and spec sheets, there wouldn't be much need for review sites. Sometimes the best specs don't make for the best product.
